What condensation looks like
Black speckled mould in the top corners of rooms, along the bottom of windows and behind furniture on outside walls. Streaming windows on cold mornings. A musty smell in a bedroom. Peeling paint on a bathroom ceiling. It is the most common form of damp in Teesside homes and the one most often misdiagnosed as rising damp.
What causes it
Warm, moist air from cooking, showering, drying clothes and simply breathing needs somewhere to go. Without enough ventilation it settles on the coldest surfaces in the house. Poor insulation makes those surfaces colder still, so the same room in the same house gets worse every winter.
How we treat it
- Treat the mould with a proper fungicidal wash, not bleach, so the spores are dealt with.
- Fix the cause. That might mean an extractor fan that actually works, trickle vents, insulating a cold wall or lining a ceiling.
- Repair the damage. Blown or stained plaster is made good and skimmed so you can decorate.
